Marketing Spying | Reverse Engineering Good Marketing

How to get good marketing ideas

Whether you have an online business or a bricks & mortar type establishment, we all need good marketing ideas to attract buyers, right?

In terms of marketing and selling, one of the first things to understand is that people don’t buy products, rather they buy answers to their problems, wants, and needs. People don’t really come to you looking for “a camera” or “a word processor.” They come to you looking for a device or something that will do a job for them.

Notice we’re using the word BUY here, not SELL. It’s true that nobody likes to be sold to, isn’t it? But people do like to BUY stuff.  So your goal as a marketer is not just to get people interested in your product or service, but to convince them that it will best help them do whatever it is they need to be done. Your job is not to make people like cameras, but to make them want to take great pictures.

The second thing you need to know about marketing is that the point of it is not to make a sale; the point of selling is to encourage a customer to buy.
The job of your marketing is to attract people to your product or service. Plus, you want people who are excited by the prospect of owning your product so much that they tell other people about it, and you want those other people to buy it too.

It’s a virtuous circle: having better products alone won’t necessarily lead to more sales although of course it helps, but remember that even a “budget” product has a place in the market.

Having good marketing describing the benefits of owning your product, leads to more interested users, which can lead to more sales. Great service will have your customers coming back for more and so on. It’s an interesting cycle of product, marketing , sales, & service.

So what makes good marketing ideas? Well there’s no quick and easy answer to that million dollar question. Of course there are some basics that will help you on the way to success, (we’re not covering those here though), the reality is that most marketing isn’t that successful. I’ll bet if you speak to most business owners that they wont have a clue which of their marketing strategies works and which doesn’t.

The key to it all is Measure & Test. When you’re designing a strategy that you think will be a good marketing idea,  be sure to include in your campaign an element of how you’ll know whether it’s working or not.

Remember, the job of marketing is to attract potential buyers, NOT to make sales. This is a common mistake. You could be attracting a shed load of potential customers with great marketing, but if your selling processes are weak, you’ll be throwing them away.

So, because nobody really has the magic answers, be sure to TEST what you think are your good marketing ideas out before spending the whole marketing budget on that strategy, and be sure to MEASURE the results. In time you’ll find what works and what doesn’t and you can invest your marketing money more wisely.

If you think about it, once you’ve discovered the strategies that work for your market and audience, you’ll have an unlimited marketing budget. Now wouldn’t that be something ?

Reverse Engineering Good Marketing

Out of the box ideas for marketing are hard to come by, but do we really need unique campaign ideas? A great way to get marketing campaign ideas is to keep an eye on your competitors. Looking at your competitors or other successful businesses for creative marketing examples, is always a good idea.

Seeing what other successful marketers are doing well will give you a big leg up. Equally, spotting what they’re doing badly is useful too, meaning you can avoid the same mistakes.

Spying is certainly the wrong way to describe it though, I prefer Market Research. In business, it would be foolish not to be aware of what your competition is doing, both good and bad.

You can learn and borrow the good ideas, and avoid the not so good ones. Why would you not? You can be sure that they are looking at you and doing the same πŸ™‚

In this video, John Crestani talks to us about the act of “reverse engineering” successful marketing. It’s quite a long session (about 90 minutes), so strap yourselves in and get ready to make plenty of notes. There are loads of case studies, strategies and tools you can use and copy.

I hope that you find it both useful and interesting. Enjoy!
